nasa has recognized that for this application, operating under the high-payload mid-term extension, the incremental value of scientific payloads is low. the flight opportunities program is designed to extend the current hpm program, in coordination with the mission-oriented programs, to offer additional payload opportunities. in this context, additional flight opportunities for the fastsci element of the hpm program will allow a high-priority mission to be accomplished (a new mission capable to neo orbit, or an orbital laboratory mission, both with a minimum number of stations) as part of the flight opportunities program. the mission to explore planet and stars program, office of education and public outreach program, and cataloging the universe program represent commercial program opportunities that can be leveraged by fastsci.

in order to accommodate the constraints of the flight opportunities program, fastsci must demonstrate an ability to launch as a single flight item on a commercial launch vehicle. fastsci will be provided by an innovative design to maximize scientific scientific return from the initial mission. ideally, the hpm flight opportunities are motivated by (but not limited to) the commercial or emerging technology opportunities described above.

phase i flight opportunity would be launch of fastsci on hpm-4, with the payload integrated with astronaut maneuvering units and extravehicular mobility units. this solution requires four fastsci stations and two umbilical connections to the iss.

fastsci can develop a concept that includes a minimum station configuration (4 stations). accelerating fastsci development requires that fastsci concept use an interface station concept similar to that described in phase i. this should also be demonstrated for other nasa mission requirements, such as the office of education and public outreach program. 84d34552a1
