For over 20 years, the International Day of the Girl Child has been observed annually on the first day of October, raising awareness about the issues girls and young women face in their home and communities. This years theme focuses on promoting equality for girls and women in the following four areas: Economic empowerment Physical and sexual assault Education Mental health The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has recognised the importance of the International Day of the Girl Child by designating 11 October as International Day of the Girl Child, and UNEP’s (United Nations Environment Programme) World Conservation Monitoring Centre, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNFPA have joined forces to raise awareness about the importance of women and girls and the key role that they can play in environmental protection and sustainable development. The UNEP-led Information Exchange (IEX) has been implementing a number of activities to prepare for the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child. These activities include: - Sharing a common set of facts with partner organisations in different countries; - Developing best practice tools to raise awareness about the needs of girls and women; - Developing messages for mass media and other communication channels; - Monitoring gender data collection and reporting and sharing the lessons learned; - Developing national campaigns; - Establishing advocacy and policy engagement. Information received through the IEX listserv shows that the response is especially strong in Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Namibia, and South Africa. For more information, please refer to the Information Exchange. There is also a great need for an integrated monitoring system of issues related to the situation of girls and women, including environmental issues. 84d34552a1
