The choice of map design is a very important part of the game's overall appeal and for good reason - Rockstar's map design team is a division unto itself. It helps to constantly surprise and delight from its use of color, texture and lighting to the building design and architecture. Though it's impressive, there are no game cities here - it's a more open world design. Still, this doesn't stop the game from having a sense of place, and events continually highlight the map's distinct features. The desert is the second-largest area, which can be explored in a variety of different ways. In the initial section, players can shoot their way across the desert plains to reach the mountains. Later, the Gunsmith can be found on an island in the Dead River where you can hunt and fish and if you're lucky, get a little revenge. There's also a mine, which in the original game you could set on fire in order to attack the rock monster and torch his base - now the islands are filled with more than the river which is an excellent way to add a bit more variety. There's a fine balance between open spaces and rugged and diverse environments and the latter are the dominant one. Forests, mountains and valleys are abundant, which is more than you'd expect for a game released in 2010.
Accompanying all of this is a huge amount of blood, a lot of explosions, a whole host of flying body parts and, of course, a fair number of explosions. Red Dead is not afraid to include the occasional bullet-time sequence, where characters can be seen in slow-motion whilst bullets fly past. But they're really not that common. Other than when a character is caught in an explosion, character models are still convincingly animated. As mentioned above, this comes courtesy of the excellent animation quality, which enables characters to realistically move in different positions and be recognised regardless of whether they are running, firing a gun or taking cover. Animations are accurate and believable, showing characters using various weapons and vehicles in-game and even, on occasion, riding horses. Characters will also use objects to gain height and avoid enemies, rather than just blending into the background. At certain points in the game, Rockstar has employed the technique of compression which can be seen in the form of a dark, simplified version of the rendered scene. When this is active, everything is simplified and seen in a less detailed sense, reducing the processing load and improving performance whilst remaining very similar to the final rendered image. Rockstar has found a way to utilise compression in a relatively effective manner. 84d34552a1
