the torrentshell's weight is at the high end of the spectrum, with the jacket weighing nearly 17 pounds and the lined version weighing just under 13. this is obviously a considerable chunk to lug around, and the majority of it is due to the single-layer shell itself. i'm a fan of the single-layer design, and its great for lightweight activities like hiking, but it definitely makes things more difficult in terms of carrying. with the single-layer torrentshell 3l, youre carrying a nearly 25-pound jacket instead of a 12-pound shell. with most other jackets, youd be carrying a 15-pound shell with a 10-pound jacket, which could equate to an extra 2.5 pounds of gear. this can make a huge difference on hikes of all lengths, not to mention on longer backpacking trips that require a lot of gear.

the torrentshell also uses quite a bit of stretchy materials for the side panels, and it felt like the jacket was on a bit of a tension, which made it feel less stable and easy to get on and off (especially if youre not used to the asymmetrical design). to alleviate this a bit, patagonia included a small cord to tighten the jacket around the waist. the torrentshell also has a tendency to ride up in the front, but it wasnt a major issue and only required a slight tug to keep the jacket from creeping up.

the torrentshell's fit is definitely similar to that of other patagonia jackets, with the smaller size likely for the torrentshell 3l being a bit wider in the shoulders and narrower in the chest. the jacket has a removable hood and a hood cinch cord with a drawcord, and i found both features worked well. in fact, the hood cinch cord allowed me to quickly cinch the jacket while on the trail, which was a real lifesaver. i definitely recommend this feature on other patagonia shells like the aether and the revolve, as they lack similar functional hood/hood cinch cords. 84d34552a1
