the rosetta stone is an inscription on a large slab of sandstone dating from 19601969 bc written in three ancient languages (greek, demotic and hieroglyphics). the inscription is a decree by a prince (ptolemy v), who ruled egypt in 204-181 bc. the decree orders officials to rebuild the temple in eleusis (in greece) which had been destroyed by a fire, and to use money from the treasury to pay for a priesthood to guard the temple.

the inscription is in three languages: greek, demotic and hieroglyphs, of which the third was later discovered to be the writing system used by the ancient egyptians. the rosetta stone is now in the musée de l'ècole française, chambéry. the stone is about 2 metres (6 feet) high, 6.5 metres (21 feet) wide and 2 metres (6 feet) deep. it is made of limestone (the colour of which is ocher) from the el-assi quarry, which lies just outside the village of rosetta, in the nile delta, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of alexandria.

the inscription, although on a single slab of stone, tells three stories. the first is the story of the completion of the building of the temple. the second is of the end of the priesthood of the temple. the third tells of the rebuilding of the temple.
