When concatenating urls in javascript always starts pretty easy but ends up looking similar to this

Before & after

Tl;dr

• clean interface to concatenate url parts (with error correction)
• set parts of url with scheme(), user(), pass(), host(), port(), path(), query(), fragment() methods (url consists of scheme://user:pass@host:port/path?query#fragment)
• calling the methods mentioned above more than once will override their values, except for path, query and fragment (they append)
• all methods mentioned above are chainable
• all methods mentioned above can take Boolean false to clear the corresponding value
• clear everything with clear() (also chainable)
• get the current url with value() / encodedValue()
• clone the current object with clone()

solution

Just build your url using sane-url-builder which provides a clean interface for creating urls. For the above example it would look like (all of the following examples are based on their predecessors):

If you have to change a value, just set it again (doesn't work for path, query, fragment/hash - read on)

sub.protocol('ftp').host('different.host').value();
// yields: ftp://different.host/endpoint?param=value

If you have to change a path, query or fragment/hash first delete it, then set it again

sub.path('some/path').path(false).path('the/new/path').value();
// yields: ftp://different.host/the/new/path?param=value

If you want to append something to a path, query or fragment/hash, just call the method again

sub.path('something').path('and/even/more').query('more=cool&stuff=here').value();
// yields: ftp://different.host/the/new/path/something/and/even/more?param=value&more=cool&stuff=here

If you want to clone the current url, just use clone()

var sub2 = sub.clone();
sub2.protocol('http').host('another-host').value();
// yields: http://another-host/the/new/path/something/and/even/more?param=value&more=cool&stuff=here

sub.value();
// still yields: ftp://different.host/the/new/path/something/and/even/more?param=value&more=cool&stuff=here

If you want to start over again without creating a new object, just use clear()

sub.clear().value();
// yields: (empty string)

query() is also happy to take an object

sub.query({'paramName': 'param value', 'anotherParam': 'another value'}).encodedValue();
// yields: ?paramName=param%20value&anotherParam=another%20value

methods

A url is made of the following parts: [scheme]://[user]:[pass]@[host]:[port]/[path]?[query]#[fragment]

sane-url-builder provides all of those [parts] as methods PLUS two aliases, which are protocol() (alias for scheme()) and hash() (alias for fragment()). All methods can be chained (except for value()/encodedValue() as it returns the built url) and called with Boolean false to clear the current value. If calling path(), query(), fragment() / hash() multiple times they will append the passed value to the current value. If calling the other methods multiple times they will simply override the current value. All methods take a simple string as parameter. query() can also take an object with multiple key/values where key ist the parameters key and value is the parameters value. To clear everything just use clear(). To clone the whole object (for changing stuff but keeping the original one) use clone().

environmental support

Currently supports commonjs (e. g. using it in node or via browserify in the browser). The compiled version (build/saneUrlBuilder.js) can be used in the browser (f. e. just loaded via script-tag).

Just do a npm install sane-url-browser first, then in your code:
