Menu What the Actual Fuck is a Crossover? …and I’m gonna let that sit for a moment. I get it that for many in the American film-making world, a review that doesn’t include at least a sentence about the box office debut is a bad one, but I’m not gonna let that get in the way of how excited I am about this genre that is becoming increasingly popular: the ‘crossover.’ I hear that the term originated in the comic-book arena, which is true, but as with many things, that’s not the root of the problem. The problem, as I see it, is that we haven’t had enough of them. We see them all the time. Sports movies, cop movies, kid movies, family movies, action movies, funny movies, and comedy movies. Hell, we even have a couple of movies that try to have a bit of horror, or a bit of comedy, but most everything seems to be in a mix of those types of movies. I can’t remember the last movie that was just one thing, but I have to say that the last time I remember seeing a movie that was just one thing was back in the day when the world was called ‘cartoon movies.’ Ya see, the golden days of ‘cartoon movies,’ I believe they were called ‘cartoon cartoons,’ were a bit of a mixed bag. They had the obvious: superhero movies, and action movies, and ‘comedy’ movies, and all that shit, but then they had also the ‘weird’ ones. They had family movies, and big budget sci-fi movies, and they had ‘historicals,’ and they had horror movies, and Westerns, and action movies, and horror movies, and adventure movies, and comedy movies. That’s what made those golden days the ‘golden days’ in my opinion. Every type of movie we were getting, and every type we got, we got a whole bunch of times. In other words, a ‘crossover,’ as a genre, had yet to appear. As people started making those multi-genre movies, I suppose it would be said that they were a bit of a trend, but the trend was growing rather than diminishing. Movies, usually on a small scale, were coming out and existing solely on the basis of the genres it didn’t have. The awesome Star Trek, for instance, was made up of the actions of various series, as if the same entire story could be told three or four times (save the last chapter). Superman was made up of the franchises he was created from, and the Fantastic Four was made up of what usually meant ‘the X-men movies.’ Batman was made up of villains. That sort of thing. Even if they weren’t ‘real’ crossovers, they were still crossovers. 84d34552a1
