In fact, when scanning 35mm film material, there is the possibility to scan the entire film roll in a single scan. This is possible for a number of reasons: The technical film speed of the particular film can be detected by scanning a filmstrip of known length. The standard format of a 35mm film is 24 frames per second (24p) or 25 frames per second (25p). For both variants, the film must be prepared for scanning, i.e. before being inserted into the scanner, the filmstrip must be released from the spool, a 35mm film roll must be wound into the scanner (if it is in the reels supplied with the scanner) - and the film must be arranged so that it is exactly located in the scanner. This is possible in most cases with the aid of a tool (Epson also gives the Epson Scan Utility with the scanner).

We have prepared an animation of the Epson V800 Photo and Epson L220 Photo operating with SilverFast. If you click on the picture, you'll see the various materials being scanned - especially the negative. In SilverFast, the filmstrips must be mounted. This is also true for the photo print. If the scan is detected as successful, the animation will start.

Obviously, you should also consider the inherent speed of the scanner. If your negativen or the photo prints are rather small (aspect ratio around 5:4 or 4:3), the L220 might not be fit for the task. A good solution here is the Epson L210 iScan - not only does this scanner record nearly all other films, it has a standard aspect ratio of 4:3 and a frame rate of 25 frames per second (25p). This is better than the Epson L220 Photo's 24p frame rate. The price of the Epson L210 iScan is comparable to that of the Epson V800 Photo. 84d34552a1
