as already mentioned, when he was thirty, qadi al-maqdisi offered ibn taimiyah the office of chief justice. ibn taimiyah replied: "i am not qualified to be chief justice; i am not trained in the law, i have not studied jurisprudence. and, as for the other branches of the law, i know nothing."


ibn taimiyah responded: "do you ask this of me, o shaikh, because you are afraid that i may give fatwa in a manner displeasing to the scholars?" qadi al-maqdisi answered: "god forbid! i am asking you because i want to see whether you can be of service to the nation and the state."


ibn taimiyah replied: "i have studied the writings of the scholars and i have been taught the science of the law by means of the books of jurisprudence, (the works of) the four hanbali legal manuals, and i have studied their opinions in all their intricacies. but now i am waiting for your order, so that i can begin."


it was narrated from hafsah bint khuwaylid that she said: "ibn taimiyah used to deal with the ruler and the ruled in the manner of a tailor."she further said: "when ibn taimiyah was being questioned about anything (by a ruler), he would say: "i do not know" (about it) and when they (the questioners) would say: "look, you are just a tailor; so, you should know." he said: "i am not a tailor; i am a scholar and the ruler and the ruled are my clients."
