If the student is unable to produce a correct answer to a problem, the program will ask him for a better approximation of the answer and then will present a chart showing a progression from lower approximations to higher approximations.
A new concept that often comes up is: "Why can't I get my teacher to understand?". We have included everything we have seen in the workbook, and more. We have tried to make the program as easy to use as possible.
Application of the Web can be exploited to maximum advantage through a number of means. It can serve a myriad of functions. It can serve as an adjunct to the curriculum, and provide the basis for individualized workbooks (that is, supplemental material to supplement the workbooks, such as supplementary material to supplement exercises, workbooks to supplement workbooks, etc.). It can also serve as a mode for delivering much of the content of the workbook. For example, the results of solving problems can be used to access content in the workbook, or the workbook can be accessed using results. It can serve as a basis for applying individual teaching methods or theory. It can be used to serve as a mode of communication between student and teacher. It can be used to serve as a mode of communication with the instructor. And finally, it can be used as a mode of communication with other students in a course. It can provide a way for students to communicate with one another, provided we can put up a Web site that can serve as a marketplace of information.
A major problem that we face is bridging the gap between the second- and the third-level modes of instruction. The instructor must have the ability to let students move at different paces, and to change materials that allow the learner to move at the pace that is most appropriate. As a result, we seek to develop materials which combine the flexibility of a workbook with the precision of a software-controlled tool. Figure 2-4, Figure 2-5, and Figure 2-6 are examples of such a combination in the form of a computer-assisted instruction workbook. Each of these should be available to the instructor as a mode of communication with the students. The workbook and the computerized instruction each have their strengths and weaknesses, and it is our hope to balance these. 84d34552a1
