the original release of the hobbit for the british market, like the first release of the edge of time for america, had its share of oddities. it wasnt released until september, a full three months after the us release. the british version only had a few more bugs than the american release, but in one key respect it was markedly inferior: the graphics. i don’t know if this was simply a case of different artists having to do the graphics, or if it was a last-minute decision, but the game’s graphics were much inferior to the american version, which was graphically the superior game. the british version even introduced the hugely unfashionable monochrome mode, which was apparently the sole reason for the game’s later demise. the other new feature was the inclusion of a few extra rooms, and a few minor plot updates.


the rest of the game was much more to my liking, the graphics were crisper than the american version, there were fewer bugs, and the puzzles were generally more challenging and rewarding. the game was still a bit of a chore to play, with the trs-80s limitations still showing in the lack of useful movement and the fairly clunky interface. the game was always more a gaming experience than an interactive fiction experience, and i find that its powers of playability much more interesting than its powers of story. the game is clearly not my favorite, but its the first text adventure i played and remember being impressed by. its hard to put into words how impressive it was, a first in the world of interactive fiction and a major milestone in my gaming career. there were many games to come, of course, but to my mind the first truly memorable text adventure of all time. 84d34552a1
