For more than 25 years, SQL Server has been available as a download from Microsoft, such as the client and tools. For information about pricing and licensing, contact the appropriate Microsoft sales office. This document shows how to create a SQL Server database, and how to connect to it by using the native tools provided with SQL Server. In particular, this lesson covers the steps used to create a SQL Server database and import a sample database to be used in the labs.

In Microsoft SQL Server database, as in most relational database systems, there are two types of rows: primary key values and all other rows. The primary key is essentially a list of the columns that can be used to uniquely identify a particular row within the table.

To create a database in SQL Server, you use the CREATE DATABASE command. This command is like the CREATE TABLE command, except that it creates a complete, new database instead of a new table within an existing database. SQL Server uses database, or schema, names to identify databases.

The command DBCC CHECKDB takes a database name as its first argument, and returns a log of any errors found in that database. It checks the structure of a database in a way similar to the way that SQL Server Compact Edition 4.0 checks the structure of the file for which it is the Data Provider.

The database is the base unit of data storage in SQL Server. Databases in SQL Server are stored in files. Databases allow you to create tables, stored procedures, functions, triggers, indexes, and constraints. You can also apply security to tables, views, and stored procedures. 84d34552a1
