in 1940, brooklyn native tariq jenkins was trying to make his way as an aspiring singer when he caught the attention of aspiring musician curtis mayfield, who saw in him the potential to be a singer. after being introduced to producer and songwriter william "billy" davis, who also had experience as a singer, the group eventually signed with epic records and began writing and recording. during this period, the group began using the name "the impressions", the name which curtis introduced to them. after recording their first album, curtis said he'd like to call his next project "superfly," a reference to the 1972 blaxploitation gangster film produced by gordon parks. inspired by this, they renounced the name "the impressions" and released the album the superfly album in december 1954 as superfly to positive critical reviews. it went on to sell two million units.
