with 7 weeks until the games start, i would expect to see the sec network not only beat out the big ten network in terms of viewership, but also have a higher number of households. the big ten network is already well into its second year but the sec network has yet to go on the air. this is the time to break away from the broadcast networks and take a risk on cable networks. look at the big 3 (nfl, mlb, nba), the biggest of them all (the nhl) has never even sniffed the possibility of a cable network. the nfl and mlb have refused to go on cable networks and the nba has never even been on the table. the sec and big ten need to take the risk and make a go of it. if they fail, they wont be blamed for it. they are just opening up a new market. the other thing is, the tv business is going to be in flux for the next several years. the cable networks need to be flexible enough to change their programming and avoid becoming inflexible if the other networks start to fail.

the big 10 is by far and away the most media rich conference in all of college sports. the big 10 has 5 national titles to the pac 12's 1. the big 10 has a long-standing relationship with espn. i can't see the pac 12 network ever matching the big 10 for tv inventory. the pac 12 has a long-standing relationship with fox. it will be interesting to see what happens over the next few years in terms of the pac 12s tv inventory. the pac 12 will be left with its tv rights and no new inventory. its up to the pac 12 to see if its a money or prestige issue that will drive its hand out for new tv rights. if the pac 12 chooses the money issue, its going to be hard-pressed to make $100m a year that the big 10 makes off espn. 84d34552a1
