s.t.s.c.i. resources s. resources.the endocannabinoid system (cns) regulates a variety of physiological processes in the cns and the periphery. within the cns, the ecs has been implicated in regulating functions such as appetite, pain sensation, motor control, reward, and cognition. because of this, research investigating the ecs has been instrumental to our understanding of brain function and the ecs has been a therapeutic target for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and psychiatric disorders. in order to fully understand the involvement of the ecs in neurobiological processes, a detailed and accurate knowledge of the ecs elements is necessary. the following article will outline a number of pathways that the ecs uses and their respective elements. it will also present information on some new discoveries made in regards to the ecs and its elements. first i will outline the endocannabinoid system: the endocannabinoid system (ecs) is a highly complex signaling system involved in regulating physiological processes including pain, reward, motor control, appetite, sleep and mood. the ecs is made up of the cannabinoid receptors, the endocannabinoids, and a variety of enzymes and transporter proteins. with the recent expansion in the research of the ecs in addition to the endocannabinoids themselves, we have seen the numerous elements involved in the ecs added to the list. these include additional enzymes, transporters, and receptors involved in endocannabinoid synthesis and catabolism. then i will outline the endocannabinoids: phytocannabinoids are over 70 cannabimimetic components of cannabis sativa. these compounds have been found to bind to cannabinoid receptors, but they are still being worked out in terms of which receptor they act upon, and at what time in the process. aminoalkylindoles are a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptor agonists. they are present in mammalian brain and also act as endogenous substrates for the enzymes monoamine oxidase a and b (mao-a and mao-b). 84d34552a1
