i have a complicated relationship with pratchett. i loved his writing as a teenager, but couldnt understand the adult worlds he was creating. i couldnt follow the story lines in the sense that i couldnt understand why the witch was going to turn albus dumbledore into a chicken, or why pratchett had created a story where the first character to enter a building is a two headed troll, or why his third wife was a frog. i wasnt mad at pratchett for not being able to write a decent story, but for not doing anything to improve his writing. i guess i was a little hurt that someone who could write such engaging work as the lord of the rings had not even attempted to do anything in the fantasy genre that i liked. that was until i read the shepherd's crown, when i was struck with the idea that he had been writing the same book over and over for 40 years, only he had been working on making it clear and accessible to a whole new audience. 84d34552a1
