Today, 1 in 5 females will experience sexual harassment at some point in their lifetime. Cyberbullying, which includes both cyber harassment and bullying is equally problematic as there is not an obvious boundary between the two forms of abuse. For example, a 2013 study of self-reported cyberbullying victims indicates that 40% of them also experience other forms of bullying, and an unspecified number also experience offline bullying. Cyberbullying can take place in different spaces and contexts. To begin with, online harassment can take the form of explicit messages sent via text, chat or video services on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and/or online video platforms such as YouTube. Girls aged 13 to 17 are more likely than boys to report being harassed through social media (59% vs. 42%), while boys are more likely than girls to report being harassed on online video sites (53% vs. 43%). It is not surprising to see that the majority of cyber harassment occurs through mobile devices, with 41% of girls and 45% of boys reporting that their experience of cyberbullying started on their mobile phone. Besides the technologically daunting landscape, the convenience and anonymity associated with this medium make it appealing to cyberbullies and often lead to them to continue the harassment. As we navigate this new world, efforts to increase online safety for young people are becoming a pressing priority. To this end, female helpline operator, Khushi Jeet Khanna, partnered with Microsoft and to put an end to gender-based abuse on the internet. The campaign, being called the #MeToo moment for good, encourages male users to use the web privately and anonymously. According to Khanna, this will not only reduce the impact of gender-based abuse on victims, but also reinforce the idea that we are no longer alone. 84d34552a1
