can themba's sudden entry into the lives of the swazi people may be attributed to his work with the parents of children who were abused by the catholic priests. he was keen to ensure that no one else should undergo the troubles and sufferings he and his friends had endured. this, along with his love for the swazi people, was the driving force behind the many stories that he continued to produce in the late 70s. xlvi however, the first real literary piece that themba is noted for was "iloome". this story begins when themba and father ciccone were sitting in the veranda of the mission during a holiday taken by the family. the father comments that themba seems tired from a long absence. suddenly, from the other end of the veranda, themba starts quivering and trembling, like a frightened antelope. he stutters something, which father ciccone, not being able to understand swaziland dialects, cannot easily interpret. themba continues, "what is wrong with me? iloome, help!" father ciccone asks him what is wrong? themba replies "nothing" and turns to look at his shaken hands. he shakes them, then does the same with his legs, right then left, then right again, trying to get loose of himself. he stutters, "iloome, iloome help, iloome! help!" then, on the verge of tears, he stammers, "iloome, iloome help, come, help! i don't know why i'm shaking so terribly. i thought i left all my troubles behind me in south africa. help me, help me, loom, loom."xlvii
iloome is a story with an underlying theme, namely that of redemption. it is a tale of a deceased prostitute who comes back to life. the spirit of iloome had fled her body, as was evident from her corpse, but father ciccone and a friend find her corpse in a dead faint in the dark. they take the corpse back to the mission, where they can no longer see any signs of life. father ciccone says: they are still shaking; they are not at rest, and when i say "please lie down with your head on the bed" they still continue to shake. the one with the bad leg begins to limp and totter. "please lie down with your head on the bed", i repeat, but they still shake. xlviii when they are lying down, father ciccone and the other person, who had taken a seat next to him, start seeing and hearing strange things. when the deceased lady's wife comes, she sees the corpse looking as though she was asleep. however, when she approaches the bed they had laid her husband, she sees him trying to jump from the bed, moving and making involuntary movements, never explaining what he was trying to do. xlix the spirit of the lady had a mission to accomplish. unfortunately, her husband, who was then a deaf-mute, was also unable to reach the key to the handcuffs that had been placed on his wrists, and hence the spirit could not free him from his fate. 84d34552a1
