This really is a sequel to the Alice In Wonderland films, and, as well as its inventiveness, the production features some wonderful actors from the 1960s heyday of British cinema, Craig Norton and Ronald Lacey are a delight to watch in the stern policeman role, both playing surprisingly good straight characters.


And the clues are kept simple - costumes are pretty specialised and simply recording in the dark with a flickering light can give people the most fantastic illusions (borrowed from Edgar Allan Poe). The story is told mostly as flashbacks, revealing the characters past, and most scenes are played on a fixed backdrop or platform, which was used rarely for most of the episodes. Two of the locations used were at Findon Pit and Leadgate Woods, which allowed four scenes of character movement in and out of them. The remaining scenes used were taken on location on the moondial floor. Though the moondial itself is quite child friendly it remains a nautical term, because two-stroke outboard motors have a similar racket to a trip around the world under full sail. All of which gave the serial a pleasant air of authenticity and makes the art of special effects, then in their infancy, all the more impressive.


Before long, the entire show, including the closing credits, are spinning. But that does not happen until the last episode was broadcast, in fact we only saw flashes of this because the rest of the set was static. Then, as the clock strikes midnight the entire set spins as a full circle and we hear three or four chimes of the Westminster clock. The cast and crew revel in this, they enjoy the applause, the clapping, they smile and fling their arms in the air to celebrate their success and meld into the cycle. In fact, apart from the chill-out room to the left of the viewing gallery for the audience and the sound studio, the set is all-white, it changes colour throughout the programme and that is what makes it all the more magical.
