The container management and security performed by JWS is outside the control of the application, and as a result of this there is no way to ensure that only the right applications or versions are run or that application code cannot be modified to bypass controls. In contrast, a well-designed AppClassLoader should always load only the code that the application needs, and should attempt to isolate applications that need to be modified. Java Platform security is commonly configured using sun.security.policy, but this file includes only a coarse-grained policy for the server VM. Additional fine-grained control of permissions and other security features is provided by the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) security model.

Starting with Java 8, a security manager is automatically constructed, which is used to install runtime permissions. This feature is useful for security hardening, restricting JVM access to more trusted components of the Java platform, and for enforcing access restrictions on system resources. However, while the security manager acts as a policy enforcement framework, it is not intended to be a comprehensive security solution for the application. Developers and users should use the classloader.getCodeAsBytecode method to load code securely, and should be aware of the threat of loaders and agents in their applications. For example, code loaded from a private repository (over the network) should be stored securely, and code loaded from an untrusted source (local file system or USB thumb drive) should be run only in a trusted container. 84d34552a1
