The qawadis of the El-Zuma repertoire lack the subtlety and the humour of the qadi vessel (Adams 1986, 1:57). The coarse and erratic ridged knobs are similar to those found on the bowls in the figurine inventory of Dahshur III, and this type of vessel may have been independently invented in Egypt, though this hypothesis needs to be proved (see below, Chapter4.2). However, these coarse and coarse textured jars shared the general decorative repertoire of the Hellenistic and Roman pots of the period. The El-Zuma qawadis consist of a coarse paste base, a handle decorated with small knobs, and a wavy band running up the body (Fig.75). The outer surface is decoratively varnished with a smooth lacquer finish. The lids of these jars are slip-on, and the wavy band is possibly a lid ridge (Brill 1982: 152; Perkins 1993:90).

The qawadis of the El-Zuma repertoire were widespread in Late Period Nubia, a large number of burials of the Late Period including the burials of Kerma have qawadis sherds. Furthermore, many of the saqiyas that have qadus sherds in the inventory actually have those sherds inside the saqiya and are not on the wheels. In this case, those sherds are not part of the burials.

Another important difference between the El-Zuma qawadis and those of the qadi vessel is that both the El-Zuma qawadis sherds and the burials lack the sigir decorations. The sigir decoration consists of the use of small knobs (or more rarely, the leaves of the lily) decorating the vessel rim in all but one of the qadi sherds of the excavation from Zim-Zim (Adams 1986, 1:61). The El-Zuma qawadis include the only example of a vessel with sigir decorations in the Burial NA II and it is different in that it has a smooth base with a plain skirt (Edwards, n.d.:200).
