quick descriptions of the branches that I worked on:

symlinks - original branch w/ POC and all of the commit history for the upstream PR that I opened
self-scope - branched from symlinks, contains the MVP symlink fix
fix-symlinks - contains a squashed commit containing all of the changes from symlinks. I used this branch for the upstream PR
