from the beginning, leo and gertrude were serious collectors, and they bought his work for its aesthetic qualities. they were not artists themselves, and they had no interest in them. but they understood well what was going on in contemporary french art. when leo bought a painting by maurice utrillo in 1913, he signed it "l. stein," which the painter was not pleased with. utrillo felt that in buying it, leo was taking credit for his work. and when the steins saw pablo picasso's seated woman with white scarf at a parisian exhibition in 1913, they recognized a matissean influence.

the steins had already begun to collect by 1907. it wasnt a sudden decision; they had held some art shows. one was a solo show in march 1907, when picasso debuted with guillaume apollinaires autumn, a gift from the steins and one of the first known works of cubism. gertrude wrote about it in a letter to her mother: i dont know why you didnt come to the show. theres something so very unpleasant about it. it wasnt done very well. its a great disappointment to me to find that i have only one picasso. it will probably be the last one. leos next one is much better. you must come to the next show. i was in a state of great excitement. its really a wonderful show. gertrude had been impressed by the elegant simplicity of picasso, his freshness and honesty. she had liked his work for years and years. thats why she saw spring in 1914 in the paris show organized by the steins. she bought the picture for $750.

the steins had picked up on picassos career, almost from its inception. they had bought, lent, and shown works by him when he was a student, and they had been there when he broke with the dominant cubist group and began painting expressionist landscapes and still lifes. they were among the first to show his paintings after his 1917 return from the trenches, when he began to show the paintings that heralded his work as surrealist. (in the summers, the steins leased a house in cap dantibes, where picasso joined them for the summer. during that time, he created une femme avec un violon, a picture of a woman playing a violin while leaning on a piano that they acquired in the fall of 1912.) gertrude and leo had been seeing surrealist work all over paris. it was the most exciting thing in painting and sculpture in the u.s. in the first decade of the 20th century, they wrote. picasso was still in paris, of course, and he still continued to do the same paintings he had been doing since the early 1900s. but for the steins, he was still a student. they had written a profile for the boston evening transcript in january 1915: its hard to believe that we havent seen any of the artists who make cubism. we have seen and heard of the best. but we have not seen the best. so we are very curious and very interested to see what picasso will do next. he is still a student, he is only 25. his great work is still to come. 84d34552a1
